The trek covers an incredible 43 kilometers (26.7 miles) of Andean terrain, following the footsteps of the Incas on their 500-year-old stone pathways. Along the way, you’ll pass lush valleys, ancient ruins, and iconic landmarks like the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), which offers the most breathtaking sunrise views of Machu Picchu.

This is more than a hike—it’s a deep, immersive plunge into Peru’s extraordinary history and natural beauty, combining challenging journeys with rewarding vistas at every turn. This adventure begins in Cusco and ends with the unforgettable experience of exploring the world-famous Machu Picchu citadel.

Itinerary

Your adventure starts bright and early with a 5 a.m. pickup from your accommodation. From there, you’ll be driven to Km 82, the official starting point of the Inca Trail. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your guide and the rest of the group for a brief orientation, covering safety tips and what to expect on the journey ahead. Once everyone is ready, we’ll begin our hike along the Vilcanota River, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The trail offers stunning views of lush valleys, snow-capped peaks, and the serene river flowing alongside us, making for a truly picturesque start to the trek.

As we continue, we’ll see the ancient ruins of Llactapata from above, a remarkable archaeological site that showcases the ingenuity and artistry of the Inca civilization. Here, you’ll have time to explore the ruins, learn about their history, and take in the incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The trail on this first day is relatively relaxed, designed to help you ease into the adventure while soaking up the natural beauty and cultural significance of the region.

Around midday, we’ll stop at a local village where a delicious lunch will be served, giving you a chance to recharge and connect with fellow hikers. After lunch, we’ll resume our journey, making our way toward Wayllabamba, our campsite for the evening. Nestled at 3,300 m (10,829 ft) above sea level, Wayllabamba offers a peaceful setting to unwind and enjoy a hearty dinner under the stars before resting up for the next day’s trek.

Day two is often considered the most challenging yet rewarding part of the trek, a true test of endurance and spirit. After an energizing breakfast surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, we begin the steep ascent toward the iconic “Dead Woman’s Pass,” the highest point of the trail at an impressive 4,215 m (13,779 ft). The climb is tough but incredibly fulfilling, as each step brings stunning views of the lush Andean landscape.

Along the way, you’ll pass through enchanting cloud forests, where the air is alive with the sounds of exotic birdlife. Keep an eye out for unique Andean plant species that thrive in this high-altitude environment, adding vibrant splashes of color to the trail. Reaching Dead Woman’s Pass is a moment to savor—standing at the top, surrounded by towering peaks, brings a profound sense of accomplishment and awe.

After taking in the panoramic vistas, we begin the descent into the serene Pacaymayu Valley, where we camp for the night. The peaceful valley, with its gentle streams and expansive views, offers a well-earned rest after the day’s effort.

Awake to the crisp, fresh mountain air as we prepare for an unforgettable journey to the second highest pass on our trek, Runkuraqay Pass (4,000 m). The climb is challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to explore fascinating archaeological sites, including the impressive Phuyupatamarca, aptly named the “Town in the Clouds.” This site is known for its beautifully preserved terraces and ceremonial baths, a testament to the ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

After a hearty and well-deserved lunch, begin your descent down over 3,000 ancient stone steps, winding through lush greenery and vibrant cloud forest. Keep an eye out for unique flora and fauna that thrive in this rich environment, adding to the magic of your journey.

The day concludes at our final campsite, the enchanting Wiñay Wayna, meaning “Forever Young.” Perched at 2,680 m (8,792 ft) with its terraced hills and breathtaking views, this site offers a glimpse into Inca agricultural practices and stunning vistas that will stay with you long after the trek. Relax and reflect on the day’s adventure as you prepare for the final leg of your incredible journey.

The crown jewel of the trek awaits! We rise early, under the soft glow of dawn, to begin our hike to Inti Punku, or the Sun Gate, the gateway to a truly unforgettable experience. As the first rays of sunlight pierce through the clouds, they illuminate the ancient city of Machu Picchu, creating a breathtaking view that simply defies description. The ethereal beauty of the citadel as seen from the Sun Gate is nothing short of magical, a moment that will stay with you forever.

After taking time to soak in the view and capture photos of this awe-inspiring sight, we descend into the heart of Machu Picchu itself. A knowledgeable guide will lead us on a two-hour tour through the ruins, unraveling the mysteries, history, and marvels of this iconic World Heritage Site. Learn about the engineering wonders of the Incas, their spiritual connections to the land, and the cultural significance of this remarkable city suspended in time.

After the tour, you’ll have free time to wander the ruins at your own pace, marvel at the intricate stonework, or, if you have the necessary permits, take on the challenging yet rewarding climb up Huayna Picchu for an unparalleled bird's-eye view of the site.

In the afternoon, our adventure winds down as we take a scenic train ride through the lush Sacred Valley, followed by a comfortable bus journey back to the vibrant city of Cusco. It’s the perfect end to an unforgettable journey, leaving you with cherished memories and a deep appreciation for the wonders of the Inca civilization.
